Recipes

+
Oven Steamed Carrots and Leeks

Vegetables and herbs combined in a foil packet then steamed in the oven – simple and delicious

2 tablespoons hazelnut, walnut, or olive oil
2 medium leeks
4 medium carrots
1/4 pound white (button) mushrooms
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut four 12-inch lengths of aluminum foil. Spread 1 teaspoon oil on each to coat half.

2. Trim off roots and dark green leaf tops from leeks. Slice lengthwise toward leaf tips to halve each leek. Plunge up and down in a sinkful of water, opening up the layers to slosh clean, then examine each down to the base. Repeat until soil-free. Lay cut side down and slice across into 1-inch lengths. Divide evenly among foil squares, arranging on the oiled part.

3. Peel carrots; cut into 1-inch diagonal slices. Distribute among the leeks. Mince mushrooms very fine. Toss with thyme, sugar, salt, and pepper. Add remaining 2 teaspoons oil and mix well. Divide evenly over the vegetables. Fold over foil and form half-moon packets, crimping edges tightly, as if making turnovers.

4. Set packets on baking sheet. Bake in center of oven 20 minutes or until tender.

Market News

Hello!

Dear customers, we appreciate your loyalty and support of Fresh Harvest during this long winter. We understand that variety and availability are low in the cold months, and are thankful to all of you for continuing to buy local produce.
We have experienced some issues with quality, and hope that you know that we will refund money if you have received a product you do not feel satisfied with. Please let us know, as it helps us to do our job better.
We are so proud of all of our fellow farmers and small business owners who we share Fresh Harvest with. We take joy in offering their product to you. Behind every item on the Market is a truly dedicated and hard working person. They are all doing there best, and all are continuing to learn, as well!
We have a great selection of vegetables this week, as well as great new items up from Bear Creek Farm and Wedge Oak Farms. And have you tried a baguette from Dozen Bakery yet? It is delivered to us warm, fresh from the oven, and is perfect with some cheese from The Bloomy Rind!

Now is the time to think flowers! The pre-paid bouquets are available, meaning current customers have the opportunity to save $20 if they pre-pay now for 10 large flower bouquets that will be available over the course of the summer. You are not obligated to get a bouquet every week – just when it suits you. The flower bouquets are available usually about 20 weeks, so you will have plenty of opportunities to order one. Please email Tally if you have any questions!

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!
John and Tallahassee

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market is Open and Food Matters Film Screening!

Good Morning Food Club,

The market is open with tons of delicious local food. All this wet weather can’t stop our growers from providing us with the best food around. Even some of our seasonal growers are starting to sell again, like…

  • Crimminny cricket, it’s Crimmins Family Farm! A huge welcome back to one of our favorite certified organic growers with their delicious curly green leaf kale and red leaf lettuce.
  • I eagerly anticipate what new hummus Geek Eats will list each week. Today there’s jalapeno and Kent Walker cheese hummus, which is loaded with chunks of Kent Walker Artisan Cheese’ garlic montasio. Yum!

Make sure to mark your calendars for this Friday, March 27th when the Green Corner Store & Soda Fountain hosts a free screening of Food Matters. This is a powerful documentary that looks at health issues, the health care system, and a growing body of scientific evidence proving that nutritional therapy can be more effective, more economical, less harmful and less invasive than most conventional medical treatments. It’s at 7pm at StudioMAIN, 1423 S. Main St, and you can join the facebook event here. Hope to see you there!

Workshops
Join us for a workshop!
You’ll be amazed by the plethora of information and lessons offered by our fantastic workshop instructors. Our workshops cover subjects such as gardening, nutrition, nutrient dense foods, natural remedies, essential oils, and much more!
Our goal is to host one workshop a week which will always be on Tuesday. The workshop schedule will rotate from 10:30 AM, 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM for the community’s convenience. The farm brings workshops to the community as an outreach to share the wealth of knowledge we have attained over the years. We do not charge for these events but allow the speakers to charge a fee to cover their time and supplies. We hope everyone will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.
Please share this with all your friends and family and RSVP via FB Events and/or Meet-Up.

The next workshop is:

Build a Rain Barrel Workshop with Ken
Tue. Mar. 24, 2015 @ 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Building a rain barrel for your garden helps with water conservation. Each person will build their own rain barrel with Ken’s help. RSVP on facebook or meetup.

We start the new year all wanting to get healthier and start eating right and exercising but sometimes we get stuck because we eat and feel bloated and run down and loose our motivation.
When your digestive system is off, your health can suffer in all sorts of ways. In addition to digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, or gas, you may also experience food allergies, weight gain, eczema, exhaustion, asthma, and more.

*If unaddressed, these symptoms can manifest into chronic health conditions. *

Here are 10 things that you can do to heal your digestive system by Katrina at Mind Body Green…
1. Chew your food.

Good digestion starts in the mouth. When you chew your food well, it eases the work required from your digestive system, so your body can focus on other tasks instead.

2. Eat real foods.

Focus on whole, fresh foods. Avoid the “fake” stuff, including processed foods and fast-foods, which are typically high in refined salt, sugar, and processed oils. Also, they’re difficult for your body to digest, and they don’t provide any nutritional value.

3. Eat fermented and cultured foods.

Fermented foods are high in “good bacteria” and eating them will help you to regenerate your gut flora naturally. The greater the variety of fermented and cultured foods you can include in your diet, the better. Try eating sauerkraut, kefir, fermented vegetables, kimchi, or Kombucha. If you have a severe gut disorder, start slowly. Allow time for your internal environment to change and for your digestive system to become healthier and stronger.

_As Always….
_
Please share with friends and family about us so that we can give more people the opportunity to buy and eat healthy! Local farmers need our support to keep providing us with all the fresh foods! If we don’t give them enough business, it’s hard for them to continue to deliver to us. Please let’s not let that happen! Tell your friends about us so we can keep the Growers supported as this is how they make their living. *_

Thank you to all of you who support Gwinnett Locally Grown!

If there is something you’d like to see in the Market, please let me know! I would love your imput!

Remember…
The Market is extending their hours! The Market will now be open from 4:00 to 7:00pm!
Having said that, if you place an order with us, PLEASE remember to pick it up on Tuesday. As I am so grateful for your orders, I also have a family at home waiting on me too!
